Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan clinched the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, clocking an impressive 12.29 seconds in a thrilling final.

The world record holder delivered a powerful performance from the start but was edged out by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold with a national record of 12.24s. The United States’ Grace Stark claimed bronze in 12.34s, while Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44s.

Amusan, 28, had been aiming to reclaim the world title she famously won in Oregon in 2022, when she became the first Nigerian and first African to take the 100m hurdles crown. Though she settled for silver this time, the medal further solidifies her remarkable career, which includes a world record of 12.12s, multiple Diamond League titles, and a Commonwealth Games gold.

Her performance also served as a strong response to critics, especially after missing out on the finals at the last Olympic Games in Paris.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel kept the country’s medal hopes alive in the men’s 400m hurdles. The 21-year-old advanced to the semifinals after posting 48.37s in a composed and confident race. Nathaniel, one of Africa’s rising stars in the event, will be eyeing a spot in the final when he competes again on Wednesday.
