Hilda Baci’s Attempts New Guinness World Record

Thousands of Nigerians rushed to Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos as Hilda Baci attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the largest pot of jollof rice.

Over 20,000 Nigerians trooped to Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, on Saturday as celebrity chef Hilda Baci set out to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest pot of jollof rice.

Many were seen rushing to the venue to have a taste of the free meal, while others raised alarm that the massive turnout was another reflection of the hunger situation in the country.

The event, organised in partnership with seasoning brand Gino, promised endless servings of Nigeria’s favourite party dish, drawing a crowd far beyond the 6,000 people the venue was originally designed to hold.

Baci, who plans to cook with 250 bags of basmati rice, assured fans that the custom-made six-metre-wide pot being used was properly sanitised ahead of the cooking marathon.

“Yes, I can officially confirm this pot is squeaky clean! I personally rolled up my sleeves and washed it myself,” she said in an Instagram post on Friday.

“In just a few hours, this same pot will be home to thousands of servings of Nigerian Jollof history in the making,” she added.

In a video clip, the chef was seen inside the enormous pot as she scrubbed its interior.

“I know you’re probably about to pop your eyeballs out. Why is she inside the pot?” she joked.
“The reason I’m inside the pot at this moment is because I need to wash the pot.

“I can assure you that once I am done washing the interior of the pot and I’ve gotten rid of all the liquid, I’m going to rinse it again, and I have brand new mopsticks that I would be using to clean it once again before we use it to cook for you.”

Baci promised the pot would be “fully sanitised” before the cooking began, pledging to serve “the most amazing, hygienic food you’ve ever eaten.”

The celebrated chef first made global headlines in May 2023 after completing a 100-hour cooking marathon that earned her Guinness World Records recognition. Today, she is trending once again as thousands gather — some for the love of jollof, others as a desperate reminder of Nigeria’s hunger crisis — to witness another chapter in Nigerian culinary history.
