Ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo says security has drastically improved across the state, crediting his administration for reclaiming areas once under the control of criminal gangs.

The governor, who is seeking re-election, said during an interview on Sunday Politics that the situation he met upon assuming office was dire, with widespread violence and fear preventing political activity.

“You had a state where, before we came into office, nobody could even wear anything that suggests you are a politician,” Soludo said, recalling the murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili and the destruction of police facilities across Anambra.

“Eight local governments you couldn’t travel to, you couldn’t get there. And now, everybody can sleep with their two eyes closed,” the governor added.

He also noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been able to conduct voter registration seamlessly across all 326 wards in the state — a feat he attributed to improved security.

Addressing the issue of the Monday sit-at-home order imposed by separatist groups, Soludo maintained that the directive no longer holds sway in Anambra.

“Monday sit-at-home thing is largely over here in Anambra; anybody sitting at home now is doing so out of his own preference, not because of insecurity as it were,” he said, emphasizing that normalcy has returned to the state.
