Tinubu Tells Religious Leaders

President Tinubu urged Catholic Bishops to support national unity, emphasizing that economic reforms and security efforts are necessary for Nigeria’s progress.

He assured them of his commitment to religious harmony and an open-door policy.

President Bola Tinubu has called for national unity, urging Nigerians to rise above religious and ethnic divisions to achieve lasting development.

VerseNews reports that during a meeting in Abuja with the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, Tinubu addressed critical issues, including economic reforms, insecurity, and religious tolerance.

The president acknowledged the economic hardships Nigerians face but defended his administration’s reforms, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy, as necessary for long-term stability.

“Yes, removing the fuel subsidy was tough, but we could not keep spending the future of our unborn children,” he said.

Tinubu emphasized the need for unity, stressing that poverty and insecurity do not recognize religion or ethnicity. “Poverty has no religious basis. It affects all, and we must fight it together,” he added, while reaffirming his commitment to tax reforms as a means of national development.

On security, the president assured the bishops that security agencies were making progress in tackling threats across the country. He called for collective efforts to address insecurity, emphasizing that crime does not discriminate between religions.

“I have no religious bias; I won’t be a bigot. My wife is a pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church,” Tinubu stated.

Reiterating his commitment to fostering religious harmony, he assured the bishops of his open-door policy. “This country must develop and stand beyond religious bigotry. We have been together for a long time, and I will not shut my door,” he said.

Despite ongoing challenges, Tinubu painted an optimistic picture of Nigeria’s future, citing increased investments, improved agricultural productivity, and declining commodity prices as signs of progress. “What seemed like a difficult beginning is now showing hope, and we are not even at half-time yet,” he noted.

The president expressed gratitude to religious leaders for their prayers and support, emphasizing that their faith and optimism were crucial in navigating the nation’s challenges. “I am thankful to all of you for your prayers,” he concluded.
