  • Benson Babajimi, chairman of the House Defence Committee, has called for a strengthened Nigeria-U.S. partnership to address insecurity, emphasizing collaboration, trust, and shared strategic interests in the fight against insurgency.

The chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Benson Babajimi (APC-Lagos), has called for a deeper partnership between the United States and Nigeria to confront rising insecurity in the country.

Babajimi made the call on Saturday after a roundtable discussion with senior U.S. officials in Abuja, stressing that “Nigeria needs the United States just as the United States needs Nigeria.”

He highlighted that over the past year, Nigerian lawmakers have engaged regularly with U.S. counterparts, reaffirming an enduring commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in Nigeria. According to Babajimi, the U.S. officials assured them that their government is committed to supporting Nigeria through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.

“At the close of our most recent discussions, both sides agreed on the need to deepen trust, expand U.S. support for Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, strengthen human rights protections, and enhance legislative diplomacy between our two nations,” Babajimi said.

The lawmaker stressed that cooperation and constructive partnership are key to addressing security challenges, advancing democracy, and protecting human rights. He also emphasized that Nigeria would not benefit from condemnation or confrontation at this critical stage in its democratic journey.
