‘Seven Years Without Justice Is Wickedness’ — Kenneth Okonkwo Demands Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Veteran actor and lawyer, Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged the Federal Government to release detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

- Veteran actor and lawyer, Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged the Federal Government to release detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued incarceration as a failure of justice and a violation of constitutional rights.
A legal practitioner and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has renewed calls for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021, faces terrorism-related charges after being extradited from Kenya under controversial circumstances.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Okonkwo lamented that Kanu has been detained for over seven years without conviction, calling it a gross violation of his constitutional rights.
“A nation that detains a human being for more than seven years and cannot even reach a judgment as to his culpability is a nation failing in the dispensation of justice,” he said.
Okonkwo, citing Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, stressed that every citizen is presumed innocent until proven guilty, arguing that “justice delayed is justice denied.”

He described Kanu’s continued detention as an abuse of legal process and urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to explore a political solution to end the prolonged case.
“Nobody remains sane to be in jail for more than seven years while a case is being tried. If you have nothing against this man, release him or reach a political settlement,” Okonkwo said.

His statement aligns with earlier appeals by Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and several South-East governors, who have repeatedly asked the Federal Government to release the IPOB leader to foster peace in the region.
