Super Eagles drop to 30th place in the latest FIFA rankings after mixed results in March’s friendly matches.

Despite remaining Africa’s third-best team, Nigeria’s position reflects their performance fluctuations.

In the latest FIFA rankings, the Super Eagles of Nigeria experienced a decline, slipping from 28th to 30th place globally.

VerseNews reports that the rankings, released by the world football governing body on Thursday, also reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as the third-best team on the African continent.

The fluctuation in Nigeria’s ranking can be attributed to the mixed results in the international friendly matches played in March.

The Eagles managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Ghana in their first friendly encounter. However, they suffered a setback in their second game, losing 2-0 to Mali.

This recent shift contrasts with Nigeria’s performance in February, where they achieved their highest FIFA ranking since May 2013. The positive surge was fueled by their silver-winning campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Despite Nigeria’s slight drop, Morocco and Senegal maintained their positions as the top two African teams. Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire completed the top five on the continent.

Globally, Argentina retained its first-place position, with France following closely in second. Notably, Belgium surpassed Brazil and England to secure third place in the global rankings.

Football enthusiasts and stakeholders await the next FIFA world ranking, scheduled for release on June 20, 2024.

This period will provide another opportunity for teams to showcase their prowess and potentially alter their standings on the global football stage.
