A detailed breakdown of the salary and allowances of Prof. Joash Amupitan, the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has surfaced, revealing the full financial entitlements attached to one of Nigeria’s most sensitive public offices.

According to official figures obtained from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Amupitan earns an annual basic salary of ₦2,026,400, translating to a monthly pay of ₦168,866.66. This base salary forms the foundation upon which several allowances and fringe benefits are computed.

INEC Chairman’s Allowances and Benefits

In addition to his basic pay, the INEC boss is entitled to a wide range of regular allowances, covering areas such as:

  • Motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance
  • Special and personal assistants
  • Domestic staff
  • Entertainment and utilities
  • Security and monitoring
  • Newspapers and periodicals

While the RMAFC document does not attach specific monetary values to these allowances, they are structured to cover operational and welfare expenses related to the Chairman’s duties.

  • Estacode (foreign trip allowance): $900 per night

  • Severance gratuity: ₦6,079,200 (payable at the end of tenure)

Public Reaction and Transparency Concerns

The release of these figures has sparked renewed discussions about public sector transparency and fiscal accountability in Nigeria. Many citizens have expressed concerns over the high cost of governance, especially within critical institutions like INEC that rely heavily on public trust.

Analysts argue that while adequate remuneration is essential to maintain the independence of electoral officials, there is a need for greater openness in how such allowances are structured, funded, and audited.

The RMAFC, which is constitutionally empowered to determine the remuneration of public officers, has maintained that these entitlements are reviewed periodically to reflect economic realities and ensure fairness across federal institutions.

Amupitan’s total compensation underscores both the weight of responsibility carried by the INEC Chairman and the public demand for transparency in the management of electoral and institutional resources.
