- President Bola Tinubu has travelled to Europe to continue his end-of-year break and ahead of a major sustainability summit in Abu Dhabi, as critics once again question the growing number of his foreign trips.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Nigeria for Europe to continue his end-of-year vacation while also preparing for an official engagement in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, early next year.
The development was confirmed on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement issued to the press.
According to the statement, President Tinubu is travelling at the invitation of the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to participate in the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit, scheduled to hold in early January.
Onanuga explained that the weeklong summit is a global annual event that brings together leaders from government, business and civil society to shape conversations and actions around sustainable development.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Lagos today, Sunday, December 28, for Europe, continuing his end-of-year break and ahead of his official trip to Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates,” the statement read.

He added that ADSW 2026, themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” will focus on connecting ambition with action across innovation, finance and people, while showcasing pathways for global progress in sustainability.
The presidency also confirmed that President Tinubu would return to Nigeria after the conclusion of the summit in Abu Dhabi.

However, the trip has once again drawn attention to the President’s travel record. Tinubu has faced sustained criticism from opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, over what they describe as excessive foreign travels.
Reports indicate that the President has embarked on more than 15 international trips in 2025 alone, a development that continues to fuel public debate over governance priorities, cost implications, and the balance between international diplomacy and domestic engagement.
