- President Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm Professor Joash Amupitan as the new INEC Chairman, following the exit of Mahmood Yakubu.
President Bola Tinubu has officially requested the Senate to confirm Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The request was read on the floor of the upper chamber by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Tuesday.
Tinubu’s nomination letter, submitted in line with the constitutional requirement for Senate approval of such appointments, has been referred to the Committee of the Whole for legislative consideration.

Last Thursday, the President had presented Amupitan’s name to the National Council of State as his preferred nominee to replace outgoing INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The council unanimously endorsed Amupitan’s nomination, describing it as a step toward strengthening electoral credibility in Nigeria.
