- Retired Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has received his Member of the Order of the Federal Republic certificate from President Bola Tinubu, calling the national honour a proud milestone for his family and career.

Retired Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has received the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) certificate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the national honours conferment on Monday.
Troost-Ekong confirmed receipt of the official certificate in a post shared on X on Tuesday, describing the recognition as a proud moment for himself and his family.
“I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (@officialABAT), for conferring on me the MFR national honour,” he wrote.
“I have been sent the official certificate today following the announcement last night. It’s a very proud moment for me and my family to receive this recognition.”
The 32-year-old defender, who has been a key figure for Nigeria’s national football team over the years, expressed deep appreciation to the country that shaped his identity and career.
“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live my dream through football,” he said.
“Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people.”
Troost-Ekong also pledged his support to the Super Eagles as they begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

“As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success,” he added.
“As promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, our nation and what we can achieve.”
In the certificate attached to his post, President Tinubu formally conferred the honour, citing Troost-Ekong’s “outstanding virtues” and appreciation for his service to Nigeria.

The national honour comes shortly after the Federal Government fulfilled its promise of gifting houses to members of the Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
The presentation was carried out through the National Sports Commission in Fez, Morocco, on Monday, almost two years after the tournament.
Led by Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, the Super Eagles finished runners-up at the 2023 AFCON, losing 2–1 to the host nation in the final.
Following the team’s return to Nigeria, President Tinubu honoured each player and official with national awards, alongside housing and land gifts, in recognition of their achievement.
