South African singer Tyla has won the first ever award for the Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night.

VerseNews reports that she was nominated alongside African music heavyweights like Davido, Asake, Ayra Starr and Burna Boy.

At the age of 22, Tyla has become the youngest African artist to win a Grammy.

With her song “Water,” she defeated Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Olamide to win the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance.

“Water” is a song was released as the lead single from her debut studio album Tyla on 28 July 2023 through Fax and Epic Records.

An amapiano song with elements of pop, R&B and Afrobeats, it sees Tyla expressing a desire for a passionate and intimate tryst.

Remix versions of the song featuring American rapper Travis Scott and record producer Marshmello were both released on 17 November 2023.

“Water” reached number one in New Zealand and the top ten in Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, Sweden and United States, where Tyla became the youngest-ever South African and the first South African soloist in 55 years to enter the Billboard Hot 100, following Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” in 1968.

The song topped Rolling Stone’s list of the 40 best afropop songs of 2023, and won the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024.

It was also nominated for Best International Song at the 2024 BRIT Awards.
