Wike Launches Fresh Security Offensive in Abuja
Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered heightened security and stronger border surveillance across the FCT.
- Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered heightened security and stronger border surveillance across the FCT, as Police Commissioner Miller Dantawaye deploys Operation Sweep to curb kidnapping, banditry, and rising criminal activity.

Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has directed the FCT Police Commissioner, Miller Dantawaye, to beef up security in the nation’s capital, alongside improved surveillance at all borders with neighbouring states and major entry points.
Dantawaye disclosed this yesterday while addressing the joint military taskforce—comprising the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies—code named Operation Sweep, which has been deployed to various parts of the FCT.
He noted that the FCT Minister has provided adequate logistics to ensure the operation’s success and guarantee the safety and security of residents, while charging the team to build the synergy required to eliminate crime and criminality across the territory.
Dantawaye further revealed that the security team has been instructed to focus specifically on areas prone to kidnapping and banditry to ensure maximum protection for all residents.

According to him:
“The FCT Minister, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, has given complete support, especially in terms of logistics for this operation. He has given approval, and I am sure that by the time we’ll be leaving here today, the funds for fueling, servicing of the vehicles, and even allowances for the men will have dropped into an account that we can access.”

The police commissioner also expressed concern over the rising influx of beggars into Abuja city centre. He said security agencies are working with relevant departments of the FCTA to tackle the menace of street begging in the capital.
He added that while legal processes for the evacuation of street beggars are being finalised, anyone arrested will be properly profiled, as criminals often disguise themselves as beggars.
