A yet-to-be-identified woman jumped into the Lagos lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge and was confirmed dead after her body was recovered near the UNILAG waterfront.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

A yet-to-be-identified woman has been confirmed dead after jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.

VerseNews learnt from a statement by the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Friday that the incident occurred on Thursday around 4 pm near the University of Lagos waterfront.

According to him, this prompted a swift response from the Marine Police stationed in the area.

“An unidentified lady, whose name is yet unknown, reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water at UNILAG waterfront on Thursday at about 4 pm.

“She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore-slip way by a team of marine police attached there, and she was confirmed dead by a team of UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of a police team from Sabo division,” the statement partly read.

Further details emerging from the incident reveal that the woman, suspected to be in her mid-20s, had no means of identification or personal belongings on her.

Reports gathered by this Online News Media indicate that she paced around the edge of the bridge, seemingly searching for a suitable ledge, before jumping into the lagoon. Despite efforts by the Lagos Marine officers stationed nearby to rescue her, she was later found lifeless at UNILAG’s lagoon front.

Her body has been deposited at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba, Lagos, for preservation.

Meanwhile, social media has been awash with a viral photo claiming to be the deceased. However, reports confirm that the image actually belongs to Adetutu Adedokun, a DSS officer who jumped into the lagoon in November 2022 after a misunderstanding with her fiancé.

Third Mainland Bridge has seen multiple suicide attempts in recent years. In June last year, an American citizen attempted to jump but was rescued, while in September 2024, a blind man tried to jump into the lagoon with his two children before being stopped by the police.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
