According to a report by The Punch, the news of Ciroma’s demise was confirmed by a family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who also serves as the secretary of the Borno state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
In a statement, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma announced the passing of the veteran unionist, bringing sorrow to many who knew and worked with him.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of Comrade Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
“The sad event occurred this evening (Tuesday, April 2) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital,” the statement partly reads.
VerseNews reports that Ciroma’s legacy in Nigerian labor movements dates back to his tenure as the president of the NLC from 1984 to 1988. His leadership during this period was marked by dedication to the rights and welfare of workers across the nation.
However, his presidency was cut short when he was forced out of office by the then-military administration of Gen Ibrahim Babangida, which dissolved the union.
