  • Justice James Omotosho has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after convicting him on all seven terrorism charges, ruling that his broadcasts and directives amounted to acts of terrorism.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment

The judgment, delivered on Thursday, comes four years after Kanu was arrested in Kenya under controversial circumstances and brought back to Nigeria. He was later charged with seven counts bordering on terrorism.

The ruling was delivered in Kanu’s absence after he insisted that the terrorism charge against him could not proceed. Following a heated exchange in the courtroom, Justice Omotosho ordered security operatives to remove him for alleged unruly behaviour.

In his judgment, Justice Omotosho held that several broadcasts made by Kanu on Radio Biafra constituted acts of terrorism. He said the IPOB leader’s rhetoric was rooted in violence and aimed at inciting attacks on security operatives and destabilising the country.

The judge further stated that Kanu’s sit-at-home orders in the South-East amounted to terrorism, as they violated the fundamental rights of residents, especially their freedom of movement. He added that Kanu had no legal authority to impose such directives.

According to Omotosho, evidence presented in court showed that Kanu’s broadcasts encouraged the killing of police and military officers, amounting to preparatory acts of terrorism.

The court subsequently found Kanu guilty on all seven counts preferred against him, despite his plea of not guilty.
