  • The Federal Government has concluded Nnamdi Kanu’s decade-long trial and is now asking the court to impose the death penalty after his conviction on all seven terrorism charges.

The Federal Government has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death penalty on Nnamdi Kanu after the court, on Thursday, convicted him on all seven terrorism charges brought against him.

Lead prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, made the application moments after Justice James Omotosho found the IPOB leader guilty, bringing an end to a trial that has spanned more than 10 years.

Awomolo argued that Kanu’s actions and broadcasts allegedly led to the killing of several security operatives and the destruction of public infrastructure, insisting that both the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), took steps aimed at destabilising the country.

He told the court that only the maximum penalty could give justice to the victims of the violence linked to Kanu’s directives. According to him, counts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 of the charge carry the death sentence, count 3 carries a 20-year jail term, while count 7 attracts five years’ imprisonment.

Awomolo further said Kanu had shown no remorse throughout the proceedings, describing his courtroom conduct as “arrogant.” The Federal Government also urged the court to order the forfeiture of all seized broadcast equipment and to bar Kanu from accessing digital devices or the internet during his imprisonment.

He additionally requested that Kanu should not be sent to Kuje Prison due to past jailbreaks at the facility.

Before the court suspended proceedings until 4:10 p.m. for sentencing, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North & South in the House of Representatives, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy.

The conviction officially marks the conclusion of the decade-long legal battle between Kanu and the Federal Government.
