- The Federal Government has released N11.8bn in zero-interest loans to thousands of tertiary institution workers under a support scheme aimed at improving welfare and career development.

The Federal Government has disbursed N11.8bn to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff across Nigerian tertiary institutions under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF).
The beneficiaries cut across 141 institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, reflecting a broad reach of the initiative within the higher education sector.
The TISSF, launched in August 2025, is a joint programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, designed to enhance staff welfare, career development, and financial stability.
Under the scheme, eligible academic and non-academic staff can access interest-free loans of up to N10m, with the goal of easing financial pressures and supporting professional growth.
Data published by the Federal Ministry of Education shows that about 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified so far. Staff members of federal universities account for the highest share of applicants at 59 per cent, followed by polytechnics at 23 per cent and colleges of education at 18 per cent.
The ministry highlighted key figures from the programme, including: “Loans up to N10m per staff (0% interest); N11.8bn disbursed to 6,842 beneficiaries from 141 institutions.
“34,000 verified applicants from 219 institutions; Federal universities (59%), polytechnics (23%), COEs (18%); minimum five years to retirement required for eligibility.”
Beyond the loan scheme, the government is also implementing broader reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative. These include the distribution of 240 e-tricycles across 12 institutions to support campus mobility and operations.
