The Federal Government has realigned the roles of TRCN and NTI, making teacher licensing and professional standards mandatory in Nigerian classrooms.

The Federal Government has announced a major realignment of the roles and responsibilities of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen the teaching profession, streamline education delivery, and ensure high-quality learning for every Nigerian child.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the restructuring of TRCN and NTI reflects the Ministry’s agenda to reposition its agencies in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope mandate, to provide the highest standard of education across the country.

Under the new framework, the NTI will focus on in-service teacher training and continuous professional development at foundational, basic, and post-basic levels, while the TRCN will concentrate on regulating the teaching profession and licensing qualified teachers nationwide.

According to Boriowo, the Federal Government has also introduced new welfare terms and operational guidelines for both agencies covering: “Teacher licensing and registration; Professional development requirements; Monitoring and compliance mechanisms; Teacher welfare and benefits; Curriculum and professional practice standards.”

Dr. Alausa stressed: “Going forward, no teacher will be allowed to stand before a Nigerian classroom without proper registration and licensing by TRCN. This ensures that every child is taught by competent, professional teachers who meet the highest standards.”

The TRCN will now enforce mandatory teacher registration, integrate digitally with the national Education Management Information System, and uphold ethics and discipline within the profession. On the other hand, NTI will serve as the implementing body for distance-based teacher training programmes, ensuring its courses meet national standards.

Calling it “a big day for the Nigerian child,” Alausa said the reform will improve teacher quality and educational outcomes across the country.

“This reform is about results and sustainability. It is about building a future where Nigerian children are taught by the best, prepared for the best, and supported by the best,” he said, adding that the Ministry will continue to work with states, private proprietors, and stakeholders to deliver on this renewed mandate.
