Lagos State University (LASU) has ordered all students to vacate hostels and suspended all academic activities, including the second semester exams, following a strike by staff unions.

The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has ordered all students residing in its hostels to vacate the premises, following the ongoing strike by university staff unions.

In an official statement released by Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, the directive takes effect from Sunday, August 4.

The decision was made during a virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, where the university reviewed the status of the strike action which began on July 31.

The industrial action involves all key unions under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

“The Senate, while considering the report, noted the information provided by the Vice Chancellor and Chairman of Senate. The demands of the striking unions are primarily directed at the Lagos State Government,” the statement said.

It further explained that LASU management had been facilitating talks between the unions and the Lagos State Government, leading to a meeting on August 1 at the Office of the Head of Service, chaired by Olabode Agoro, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for August 7.

As part of the Senate’s resolutions, the university has also suspended the second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session, which were due to start on August 4. All academic activities have been halted until further notice.

“In addition, all students residing in the university hostels across Ojo, LASUCOM, Ikeja, Epe, and Badagry campuses are to vacate the hostels by 6:00 a.m. on August 4,” the statement added.

The university urged all students and members of the LASU community to remain calm and law-abiding during the disruption.
