The Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has stirred public debate after calling for the hanging of the former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.

Oshiomhole made the remarks in a video that surfaced during the screening of a new NMDPRA nominee, Saidu Aliyu Mohammed, where he criticised what he described as deep-rooted rot and sabotage within the oil and gas sector.

The comments followed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to summon Ahmed to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday amid allegations of economic sabotage and corruption. Ahmed was subsequently removed from office.

Earlier, Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, had accused Ahmed of being involved in multi-million-dollar corruption. Speaking at a press conference at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery on Sunday, Dangote alleged that the leadership of the NMDPRA colluded with international oil traders and importers to frustrate local refining by continually issuing petroleum product import licences.

Dangote also claimed that Ahmed was living beyond his legitimate means, alleging that four of his children attend secondary schools in Switzerland at costs running into several million dollars.

Reacting to Ahmed’s removal, Oshiomhole praised President Tinubu for what he described as swift and decisive action. He said he was pleased with the development and questioned the policy direction of officials who, according to him, preferred importation over local production and job creation.

“I celebrated the removal of Farouk Ahmed last night. He needed to be hanged. Anyone who opposes job creation in Nigeria while preferring importation doesn’t deserve to live,” Oshiomhole said.

The former labour leader added that failure to confront such practices, in his view, could have dire consequences for the country’s economy.

Ahmed’s exit from the NMDPRA has continued to generate mixed reactions nationwide, with some Nigerians welcoming the move as overdue accountability, while others argue it reflects an elite power struggle rather than reforms aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
