Nigeria’s Super Eagles now know their next opponent as they continue the race to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following a dominant 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, the Super Eagles secured a place in the CAF World Cup play-offs after finishing as one of the four best runners-up in the African qualifiers.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Nigeria will face Burkina Faso in the decisive play-off tie scheduled for early 2026.

The match will determine which nation advances to the Inter-Confederation Play-Offs to compete for one of the remaining global qualification slots.
The Super Eagles, led by coach Finidi George, produced a statement win in their final group fixture — with Victor Osimhen netting a hat-trick and Frank Onyeka scoring a late goal to seal victory at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

However, their points tally fell just short of South Africa, who finished top of Group C after defeating Rwanda 3–0 in Mbombela to clinch automatic qualification.
The play-offs are expected to be fiercely contested, with four African teams battling for a single slot to represent the continent at the global inter-confederation round in Mexico, March 2026.
“We’ve shown great resilience to get this far. Now, the focus is on sealing qualification. Every game counts,” a source in the Nigerian Football Federation was quoted as saying.

With their World Cup dream still alive, the Super Eagles will look to capitalize on their current momentum and secure a return to the world stage after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.
