  • After a dominant 4–0 win over Benin, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive.

Nigeria reignited their FIFA World Cup qualification campaign after a commanding 4–0 victory over Benin on Tuesday, a result that lifted the Super Eagles into second place in Group C and secured their place in the CAF playoff stage for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Star striker Victor Osimhen was the hero of the night, netting a brilliant hat-trick before Frank Onyeka added a stoppage-time strike to seal the emphatic win at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Group C Drama and South Africa’s Rise

Nigeria entered the final group game knowing they had to win convincingly and hope other results went their way. Group leaders Benin only needed to avoid a heavy defeat but were overwhelmed by a relentless Nigerian side.

Meanwhile, South Africa cruised to a 3–0 win over Rwanda in Mbombela, finishing top of Group C to seal automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Under CAF’s qualifying format, only the nine group winners advance directly to the tournament. The four best runners-up, however, qualify for a playoff stage to fight for one final African slot.

The Playoff Route: Nigeria’s Next Challenge

With Onyeka’s late goal giving them a decisive goal-difference edge over Burkina Faso, Nigeria ranked among the four best runners-up in Africa. This earned them a place in the upcoming CAF playoff to be hosted in Morocco next month.

The semi-finals will take place on November 13, 2025, followed by the final on November 16 — both as one-leg knockout fixtures on neutral ground. If matches end level after 90 minutes, they will go to extra time and penalties, as per FIFA regulations.

Playoff pairings will be decided according to the October 23 FIFA World Rankings, matching the highest-ranked team against the lowest and the other two in the second semi-final.

Based on current standings, Nigeria are projected to face Gabon, while Cameroon are likely to meet DR Congo in the other semi-final.

The winner of the playoff final will advance to an inter-confederation playoff in March 2026, where they will battle teams from other continents for one of the remaining World Cup berths.

What Nigeria Must Do to Qualify

To reach the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria must:

  1. Win their CAF playoff semi-final and final in Morocco.
  2. Advance to and triumph in the inter-confederation playoff in March 2026.

With Osimhen’s form, Onyeka’s energy, and the Super Eagles’ attacking firepower, Nigeria remain strong contenders to return to the world’s biggest football stage. But with everything now riding on knockout matches, their journey from Uyo to North America will demand flawless execution, focus, and belief.
