According to the Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, the emergency services were alerted around 11:00 a.m. about four men trapped within the confines of a pit latrine.

The response team arrived swiftly at the scene by 11:15 a.m. to conduct the rescue operation. The sequence of events began with Malam Danjuma entering the latrine to retrieve the fallen cell phone and becoming trapped. In a desperate bid to save him, his son and two others entered the latrine and also got stuck.

He said, “We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at about 11:00 a.m. from one Aminu Yar’gwanda, that four men had been trapped inside a pit latrine.

“Danjuma was trying to retrieve a cell phone that fell into the pit latrine when he got trapped. Thereafter, his son entered the pit toilet to save his father and also got trapped.

Abba Alasan, 28, another individual who entered the latrine, was the only one rescued alive from the tragic scenario. Abdullahi detailed that the first three men were extracted unconscious and subsequently handed over to the local police.

The police then transported the victims to Bichi Special Hospital. Upon arrival, medical professionals confirmed that Danjuma, Ibrahim, and Gaye had died, while Alasan survived the ordeal.

This heart-wrenching event underscores the perilous conditions and risks associated with unsecured pit latrines, prompting a call for more stringent safety measures in rural sanitation facilities.
