Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele will remain imprisoned for failing to meet the N300 million bail condition ordered by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

VerseNews reports that the court also adjourned the case to January 18, 2024, for the continuation of trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Emefiele on a six-count amended charge bordering on fraud.

Emefiele was arraigned before Justice Hamza Muazu.

Emefiele’s Counsel, Mr Mathew Burkaa, SAN, had secured the application for his bail earlier.

The court held that Emefiele should produce two sureties, who must have landed property in the Maitama District of the FCT.

Emefiele is to submit all his travel documents to the court registrar and must remain within the Abuja Municipal Council.

The court on November 17, ordered the remand of Emefiele in Kuje correctional facility pending a ruling on his bail application.

Justice Muazu issued the order on Friday morning following Emefiele’s arraignment and his plea of not guilty to a six-count amended charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Emefiele is accused, among others, of abuse of office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
