The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has officially barred politicians and government officials from speaking on its pulpits during services.

This move comes just a week after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike held a thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, where he used the church podium to “criticize his political opponents.”

In a memo signed by the Primate of the Church, Most Revd Dr. Henry Ndukuba, the Church stressed the importance of “maintaining neutrality and avoiding political partisanship within places of worship.”

The new guidelines were announced during the Episcopal Consultation held in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu.

The memo cited growing concerns about the “increasing politicisation of religious platforms” and warned that such acts could “tarnish the Church’s image and divine mission.”

The Anglican Church further instructed its clergy not to “glorify or endorse political figures in ways that could undermine the sanctity of the Church.”
