Buhari’s Body Will Be Returned To Nigeria As Cargo Consignment

Human rights lawyer and activist, Chidi Odinkalu, has issued a sharp reminder to Nigerian politicians on the need to invest in the country’s health infrastructure, stating that leaders who die abroad are often returned home as cargo.

Mr. Odinkalu made this statement on Sunday while reflecting on the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.

“Nigeria’s current rulers may need to be reminded: Those who die in foreign hospitals only get to return to the country as cargo,” Odinkalu wrote.

He further emphasized the point, noting:

“They don’t pass through @immigrationng. Rather we clear them through @CustomsNG as import. If you don’t want this, build a hospital that can work for you.”

Reflecting further on Mr. Buhari’s legacy, Odinkalu recalled the December 2015 #ZariaMassacre, during which Nigerian security forces allegedly killed hundreds of Shiite Muslims, including three sons of Sheikh El-Zakzaky, under the former president’s command.

“I remember today all the #Shiites liquidated in the #ZariaMassacre in Dec 2015 under the orders of the C-In-C, including 3 sons of Sheikh El-Zakzaky. Their remains were transported in at least 47 trucks & buried in #MassGraves in Mando Kaduna,” Odinkalu stated.

In response to Mr. Buhari’s passing, President Bola Tinubu praised him as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman,” noting that his “legacy of service and sacrifice would endure.”

The president also directed Nigerian flags to fly at half-mast nationwide and instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to accompany the late former president’s body back to Nigeria.
