US Issues Severe Warning to Visa Overstayers, Threatens Lifetime Ban

The United States government has issued a stern warning to foreign nationals – especially those from Africa – against overstaying their visa validity, stressing that violators could face “deportation” and even a “permanent ban” from re-entering the country.

In a statement released on Monday, US immigration authorities reiterated their firm stance on visa compliance:

“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised period of stay, you could be deported, and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States.”

The warning comes amid a surge in migration, particularly among young Africans, many of whom seek better educational and economic opportunities in the U.S.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, visa overstays account for a significant proportion of annual immigration violations. As a result, the U.S. has introduced tighter enforcement measures and launched renewed public awareness campaigns through USCIS.

Under current U.S. immigration law, individuals who stay in the country unlawfully for more than 180 days may face a 3-year or 10-year reentry ban, while longer or repeated violations could result in a lifetime bar from returning.

For Nigerians and others planning to study or relocate to the United States, the advisory underscores the importance of adhering strictly to visa conditions, especially as immigration systems worldwide come under increased scrutiny.
