The Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Godiya Akwashiki, has died at the age of 52 after a prolonged illness.
A family source confirmed the death on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, revealing that the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India.
Describing his death as a major loss to the state, the source said Akwashiki’s leadership style and commitment to the development of Nasarawa North left a lasting impact on the constituency.

“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced because of his purposeful leadership,” the source said. “His projects are spread across every part of the constituency, and he remains the only senator from the zone to contest and win a second term.”

Before his election into the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Akwashiki served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate during the 2019 general elections and was re-elected in 2023.
His death has sent shockwaves across Nasarawa State’s political circle, with tributes expected to pour in from colleagues, constituents and party leaders.
