Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted after Portugal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite dominating possession throughout the encounter, Portugal struggled to convert their control into clear-cut chances, managing just seven shots and only one on target. The disappointing result extended Ronaldo’s goal drought in major international tournaments to ten matches.
Following the game, the 41-year-old captain took to social media to address fans and teammates, urging them to remain focused on the challenges ahead.
“It wasn’t the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Head up and focus on the next game,” Ronaldo wrote.
Portugal controlled 75 percent of possession and completed more than 700 passes during the match, but DR Congo remained resilient and frustrated Roberto Martinez’s side throughout the contest.

Ronaldo was largely isolated in attack, receiving limited service in dangerous areas as Portugal failed to break down their opponents consistently. The veteran forward showed visible frustration at the final whistle as his search for a first goal of the tournament continues.
The draw leaves Portugal with work to do in Group F, with upcoming fixtures against Uzbekistan and Colombia now carrying greater importance as they seek qualification for the knockout stages.
While the result was disappointing, Portugal remain confident of progressing, with Ronaldo insisting the team must quickly move on and focus on securing victories in their remaining group matches.
