End of ASUU Strikes Is My Answer to Prayers – President Tinubu

• President Bola Tinubu says the absence of ASUU strikes since he assumed office is “an answer to my prayers,” describing the uninterrupted academic calendar as a major achievement of his administration.

President Bola Tinubu says the absence of strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since he assumed office is one of his administration’s major achievements, describing it as “an answer to my prayers.”

Tinubu made the remark while hosting members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Addressing the bishops, the President acknowledged the economic hardship Nigerians have experienced but insisted that his administration has stabilized the country and laid the foundation for future prosperity.

According to him, the uninterrupted academic calendar in public universities is evidence that the government is making progress.

“ASUU is not on strike. They are not bringing agony to your homes. Is that not an answer to our prayers? To me, that’s an answer,” Tinubu said.

He noted that students can now complete their university programmes within the expected duration, unlike previous years when prolonged industrial actions repeatedly disrupted academic activities.

The President’s comments come against the backdrop of ASUU’s history of frequent strikes, which resulted in more than five years of cumulative academic disruptions between 1999 and 2022, including the union’s nine-month strike in 2022.

Tinubu also maintained that his administration has achieved greater stability since taking office in May 2023, highlighting reforms such as the launch of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

On security, the President acknowledged the country’s challenges but urged Nigerians to remain united, saying the nation has no alternative but to work together for peace, stability and prosperity.
