- Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel says he is yet to receive the plot of land promised by the Federal Government after Nigeria won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Former Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel has revealed that he never received the plot of land promised to members of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad by the Federal Government.
Following the Super Eagles’ victory at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan rewarded the team with national honours, cash gifts and promised each player a plot of land.
However, Mikel says the land allocated to him has never been handed over.

Speaking on Peter Crouch’s podcast, the former Chelsea star recalled the grand reception the team received after lifting the trophy but admitted that the promised reward remains unfulfilled.
“We got a nice reception. We got offered a massive plot of land each. I don’t think I know where mine is,” Mikel said.
Mikel captained Nigeria to the AFCON title, ending the country’s 19-year wait for continental glory.
The former midfielder retired from professional football in 2022 at the age of 35, bringing an 18-year career to an end.
He enjoyed the most successful spell of his club career at Chelsea, where he won multiple major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Europa League, before ending his playing career after spells in China, Turkey, England and Kuwait.
