The new national ID card, powered by the AFRIGO card scheme and NIBSS, can be requested with a NIN through an online portal, NIMC offices, or banks.

The card will be issued through the applicant’s bank and can be picked up at a designated center or delivered for an extra cost.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the upcoming launch of a new National Identity card, designed to serve as a single, versatile card known as the General Multipurpose Card (GMPC).

VerseNews gathered that this innovative card will consolidate multiple functions, eliminating the need for individuals to carry several different cards.

According to a statement from NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the GMPC will have a variety of use cases, including payments and financial transactions, government services and interventions, as well as travel-related uses.

This development aligns with the Nigerian government’s plan to introduce a new National Identification Number in the country.

The Commission is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to facilitate the card’s payment and financial capabilities, ensuring that the GMPC is both functional and secure for its intended purposes.

This move marks a significant step towards streamlining identity and financial services in Nigeria.

“The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS.

“Applicants for the card will have to request with their NIN through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks

“The card will be issued through the applicants’ respective banks in line with existing protocols with the issuance of the Debit/Credit cards.

“The card can be picked up by holders at the designated centre or delivered to the applicants at the requested location at an extra cost to be borne by the applicants,” Adegoke said in the statement.
