The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦68.7 billion for solar projects in federal universities, teaching hospitals, and rural agricultural centres across Nigeria.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦68.7 billion for the first phase of solar electrification projects targeting federal universities, teaching hospitals, and rural agricultural centres across the country.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this on Thursday after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

He explained that the initiative is part of a ₦200 billion solar energy programme designed to improve electricity access in health, education, and agriculture sectors.

According to Adelabu, the ₦68.7 billion represents the initial phase of the ministry’s funding pipeline and will cover the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of solar mini grids under the Energising Education Programme (EEP) managed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

“These projects reflect the government’s resolve to ensure a steady electricity supply in vital sectors like health, education, and agriculture,” the minister said.

He added that the programme will also reduce the dependence of public institutions on diesel generators and ease energy costs for schools and hospitals.

Full List of Beneficiaries

The universities and medical institutions listed to benefit from the first phase include:

  1. University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  2. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria
  3. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife
  4. University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka
  5. University of Calabar (UNICAL)
  6. University of Ibadan (UI)
  7. University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
  8. Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State

Adelabu noted that the projects are expected to be completed within seven to nine months, citing the success of earlier solar installations at the University of Abuja, Nigerian Defence Academy, and Usmanu Danfodiyo University as proof of feasibility.

Boosting Rural and Agricultural Power Access

In addition to universities and hospitals, the wider ₦200 billion solar electrification plan will power Agricultural Centres of Excellence and rural farm clusters across Nigeria. The intervention is aimed at enhancing electricity supply for micro and small-scale agro-processing businesses, particularly in underserved communities.

The minister emphasised that the solar projects are designed to promote inclusive economic growth and unlock productivity in rural areas, while improving the quality of services in education and healthcare facilities nationwide.
