The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has issued a strong response to Nigeria following a formal complaint filed by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to FIFA over alleged player eligibility violations.

Nigeria’s petition accuses DR Congo of fielding ineligible players during World Cup qualifiers, alleging that the world football governing body was misled through incomplete or inaccurate documentation. The complaint has since triggered a public exchange between officials of both football federations, drawing widespread attention across Africa and beyond.

Reacting to the development, the Congolese Football Federation dismissed Nigeria’s action as unnecessary and unsporting. In a statement posted on the official DR Congo national team X account, the federation urged Nigeria to settle matters on the pitch rather than through legal channels.

The statement read: “If you cannot win on the pitch, do not try to win from the back door. The World Cup must be played with dignity and confidence, not with legal tricks. Bring it.”

DR Congo’s Director of Football, Hérita Ilunga, also responded with a pointed message directed at Nigeria, stressing that FIFA’s eligibility rules are based on sporting nationality rather than domestic legal definitions.

According to Ilunga, “FIFA does not consider legal nationality but sporting nationality. If that is true, I advise you, dear Naija brothers, to focus on AFCON instead.”

The Congolese response came shortly after the NFF’s General Secretary confirmed publicly that a formal petition had been submitted to FIFA. He maintained that DR Congo deceived FIFA by submitting misleading or incomplete information concerning the players involved.

Explaining Nigeria’s position, he said: “That is why FIFA cleared them. FIFA rules state that once you have a passport from your country, you are eligible. However, our concern is that FIFA was deceived into granting that clearance. It is not FIFA’s responsibility to ensure that Congo’s internal laws are followed. What we are saying is that there was fraud.”

At the center of the dispute are questions surrounding legal documentation and nationality status rather than on-field performance. Nigeria argues that the players may not have fully met the requirements of Congolese law at the time FIFA granted eligibility clearance.

Under the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Congo, nationality is governed by strict legal procedures. Foreign nationals can only acquire Congolese citizenship through naturalization, marriage, option, or adoption, and even then, the process requires approval by the National Assembly, the Council of Ministers, and the President in the national interest.

DON’T MISS: FIFA Slams Malaysia With Three 3–0 Losses Over Ineligible Players Scandal

Nigeria contends that these constitutional steps may not have been fully observed, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the players’ nationality status during the qualifiers.

The controversy comes amid FIFA’s renewed zero-tolerance stance on eligibility violations. Recently, Malaysia was handed a three-point deduction for breaching player eligibility rules, a precedent that adds weight to Nigeria’s complaint.

FIFA is now reportedly conducting a detailed investigation into the matter. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for World Cup qualification and the FIFA Intercontinental Playoffs, while potentially setting a major precedent in African football governance.

Both Nigerian and Congolese football fans are now awaiting FIFA’s final decision on whether DR Congo could lose their playoff spot and if Nigeria could benefit from the ruling.
