- Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has declared a nationwide public holiday after the country’s stunning 2-1 victory over Germany secured a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Daniel Noboa has declared Friday a nationwide public holiday after Ecuador pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating Germany 2-1.
The historic victory at the New York/New Jersey Stadium secured Ecuador’s place in the Round of 16 and marked only the second time in the country’s history that it has progressed beyond the World Cup group stage.
Reacting shortly after the final whistle, President Noboa praised the players and coaching staff for overcoming criticism and delivering a memorable moment for the nation.
“Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, holiday! Long live Ecuador.”
Ecuador went into the decisive Group E encounter needing a win after opening their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw against Curaçao.
Germany made the perfect start when Leroy Sané scored in just the second minute.
However, Ecuador responded quickly, with Nilson Angulo finding the equaliser in the ninth minute.
The decisive moment came in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata fired home the winner, sending Ecuadorian fans into wild celebrations.
The famous victory not only knocked the four-time world champions out of the tournament but also matched Ecuador’s best-ever World Cup performance, having previously reached the knockout stage at the 2006 tournament.
As celebrations continue across the South American nation, Friday’s public holiday is expected to turn into a nationwide football party as Ecuador prepares for its biggest World Cup challenge yet. 🇪🇨⚽🎉
