Former vice president and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar claimed that the late human rights activist Gani Fawehinmi gave him the idea to look into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s certification.
VerseNews reports that Atiku sued President Bola Tinubu for his academic performance at Chicago State University.
To support his claim that Tinubu’s Chicago State University, CSU, certificate was forged, he asked for the supporting documentation.
One of the claims in the lawsuit Atiku filed to contest Tinubu’s election was forgery, which the presidential election court dismissed.
Atiku continued his legal battle in the US court despite the judge’s decision in the hopes of obtaining official records to support his case and possibly use them in his Supreme Court appeal.
He had argued that Tinubu should not have been allowed to run for office because of errors in the certificate he had provided to the INEC.
Atiku stated during a press conference on Thursday that the process of security agencies verifying the credentials of applicants for higher office shouldn’t have taken weeks or months.
He said, “The reputation of Nigeria is at stake. I am a democrat by conviction and citizen of a country that I love.
“I must thank our lawyers, bother here and abroad, for helping us bring clarity to this issue that has dragged for about half of a century.
“The late Human right Gani Fawehinmi, has vindicated us. Now he can truly rest in peace knowing that the journey he started 23 years ago is on course.”
