Zambian Foreign Minister Stanley Kakubo has resigned after being allegedly caught on video receiving cash bribes from a Chinese contractors, VerseNews reports.
While not denying his presence in the video, Kakubo cited “malicious claims over a business transaction” as the reason for his resignation to avoid distracting the government.
VerseNews reports that the video of Kakubo counting cash sparked speculation, with unverified notes mentioning a $200,000 transaction.
Kakubo’s resignation was accepted by President Hakainde Hichilema, emphasizing the need for accurate context.
This is Kakubo’s second controversy, with a previous bribery accusation. Ex-President Edgar Lungu called for an investigation into Kakubo’s alleged corruption.
However, the Zambian government, led by Hichilema since 2021, faces scrutiny over its anti-corruption efforts.
In 2018, a Nigerian politician, Umar Ganduje, was caught on camera receiving bribes from public works contractors while serving as governor of Kano in the country’s North-West. He declined to resign from office and went on to win reelection.
After completing his two years, he was offered a ministerial position by President Bola Tinubu.
After being dropped for ministerial consideration, Mr Ganduje became the chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, maintaining his political influence over the president’s party.
