FG Announces Date To Begin Payment Of New Minimum Wage

The Federal Government affirms the implementation and payment of new minimum wage despite ongoing negotiations, with arrears to be provided from May 1.

President Tinubu reassures workers of his administration’s commitment to enhancing their welfare during the Workers’ Day celebrations.

During the Workers’ Day celebrations at Eagles Square, the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage, effective May 1, 2024, VerseNews reports.

Addressing the gathered workers, she assured them that the wage adjustment would come into effect despite ongoing negotiations.

Onyejeocha emphasized that workers would receive arrears from May 1 once the new minimum wage is formally signed into law.

She acknowledged the dissatisfaction among labour unions regarding the current wage structure, with demands for a substantial increase to N615,000 to address the prevailing economic challenges and high cost of living in Nigeria.

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), underscored the urgency of addressing workers’ welfare concerns, emphasizing the need for fair compensation amidst rising living expenses.

He highlighted the union’s demand for a significant wage increase, urging social partners to consider the proposed N615,000 minimum wage.

Amidst these demands, President Bola Tinubu expressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to improving workers’ welfare and enhancing their working conditions.

He commended Nigerian workers for their dedication and contribution to national development, emphasizing the importance of fair wages and improved working conditions.

VerseNews gathered that Tinubu’s administration has implemented various relief programs, including wage awards and an imminent minimum wage review, aimed at enhancing workers’ welfare and livelihoods.

He assured workers of his dedication to providing the necessary support and tools for their success while wishing them a happy May Day celebration.

The President also addressed concerns regarding the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), emphasizing the importance of retaining the organization’s functions in supporting pensioners’ welfare.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to upholding workers’ rights and ensuring their well-being in line with the nation’s development goals.
