FG Budgets N869 Billion To Conduct Census In 2023

The federal government has budgeted a sum of N869 billion to conduct a successful  National Population and Housing census in the country.

This Online News Media reports that the counting exercise will hold between March 29, 2023, and April 2, 2023, in all 774 local government areas of Africa’s largest population.

Speaking on raising the money, the government said N291.5 billion (that’s 46%) of the money has been made available adding that the door is open for cash donations.

However, the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba who spoke on allocation of N869 billion said that N626 billion, which approximates to $1.36 billion, will be allocated towards the census proper; while N243 billion, equivalent to $527 million, will be channeled towards post-census activities, spanning over the next three years.

The government will partner with development partners, including the United Nations Populations Fund, UNFPA, to conduct the census.

UNFPA will manage the basket fund to consolidate donations towards this vital undertaking, reflecting the government’s commitment to precision and international best practices.

VerseNews Nieria gathered that, the last census was conducted in 2006 and recorded a population of 140 million.

Currently, the estimated population of Nigeria is 216 million making it the largest in Africa.
