The stage is set for a thrilling semi-final showdown at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as Nigeria’s Super Falcons face defending champions South Africa on Tuesday in Casablanca.

When Nigeria and South Africa meet on the football pitch, it’s never just a game — it’s a clash of titans. That rivalry takes center stage again on Tuesday as the Super Falcons face Banyana Banyana in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Morocco.

This highly anticipated match brings together two of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams. Nigeria, the record nine-time champions, are aiming for a return to the final as they pursue a 10th title — a goal they’ve called Mission X. South Africa, the defending champions, are determined to make it to their third consecutive final and prove that their 2022 triumph was no fluke.

Path to the Semi-Finals

The Super Falcons advanced to the semis after a dominant 5–0 win over Zambia’s Copper Queens, while Banyana Banyana edged past Senegal 4–2 on penalties after a goalless draw across 120 minutes.

Head-to-Head: Nigeria Hold the Edge

Nigeria and South Africa have met 10 times in WAFCON history. The Super Falcons lead with eight wins, while South Africa have claimed two — including their dramatic group stage victory in 2018 and another in the 2022 edition. Across all competitions, they’ve clashed 23 times, with Nigeria winning 15, South Africa 4, and 4 draws.

Key Players to Watch

Nigeria’s strength lies in both attack and defence. Forward Esther Okoronkwo leads the tournament with four assists and played a starring role against Zambia. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, a consistent performer, has earned Woman of the Match honors in two of Nigeria’s four games. Chinwe Ihezuo, with three goals, remains Nigeria’s top scorer and netted the crucial winner against Botswana.

At the back, Nigeria have yet to concede a goal in the tournament — thanks to solid displays from veteran defender Osinachi Ohale and fullbacks Michelle Alozie and Ashley Plumptre.

South Africa, on the other hand, bring experience and firepower of their own. While star forward Thembi Kgatlana is unavailable, Jermaine Seoposenwe, Hildah Magaia, and Lebogang Ramalepe provide more than enough attacking depth. Magaia, the hero of the 2022 final, has been instrumental in helping Banyana Banyana reach this stage.

Match Details

  • Date: Tuesday, July 22, 2025
  • Time: 5:00 PM WAT (Nigeria time)

With pride, legacy, and a place in the final at stake, this semi-final promises to be a classic. Nigeria seek to extend their dominance and claim a spot in yet another final, while South Africa aim to defend their title and solidify their rise as a powerhouse in African women’s football.
