Peter Obi Accuses Tinubu of Using False Statistics to Mask Nigeria’s Economic Crisis
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of presenting misleading statistics to conceal the true state of Nigeria’s struggling economy.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi recalled that during the 2022 presidential campaign, Tinubu mocked his reliance on data for governance.
“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other Presidential Candidate (Peter Obi), he was ashamed to call his name, saying ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians,’” Obi wrote.

Obi noted that nearly two years into Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria is ranked among the hungriest nations in the world, with millions of citizens uncertain about their next meal.
He accused the president of “overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics” on unemployment, inflation, and GDP rebasing, claiming the figures are designed to paint a false picture of progress amid worsening household and economic conditions.

“Governance is not rocket science. It’s not a gamble. It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” Obi added.

His comments come hours after billionaire Aliko Dangote praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying they were helping to restore investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy.
