Arsenal have made a powerful statement ahead of their Premier League title defence after cruising to a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the annual curtain-raiser at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, producing a vibrant performance that suggested their hunger for silverware remains as strong as ever.

The Gunners needed just 24 seconds to announce their intentions, with Riccardo Calafiori firing Arsenal into an early lead after capitalising on a defensive lapse from City.

Arsenal continued to overwhelm their opponents with their trademark intensity and were rewarded again in the 27th minute.

Martin Odegaard was given time and space to deliver a cross towards the far post, where new signing Christos Tzolis headed the ball back across goal for Kai Havertz to rise above Ruben Dias and head home.

The second goal left City struggling to cope with Arsenal’s pace and movement, while Erling Haaland endured a frustrating afternoon and failed to make a significant impact.

Arsenal captain Odegaard then completed the rout three minutes after half-time.

Tzolis rolled the ball into the Norwegian’s path, allowing Odegaard to weave through the City defence before producing a clever dummy to leave Gianluigi Donnarumma wrong-footed and finishing from close range.

The emphatic victory gave Arteta the perfect opportunity to showcase Arsenal’s summer recruits.

Bruno Guimaraes, signed from Newcastle for £75 million ($101 million), settled comfortably into the midfield, while Tzolis, who joined from Club Brugge for £34 million, impressed with an energetic display and two assists.

The triumph comes as Arsenal prepare to begin their first campaign as English champions since the 2004-05 season.

Having already been installed among the favourites to retain the Premier League title, the Gunners’ performance against City will further strengthen expectations that they could establish themselves as the dominant force in English football.

Arsenal’s victory also provides the perfect momentum ahead of their Premier League opener against promoted Coventry at the Emirates Stadium on August 21.

Maresca Faces Early Test

For Manchester City’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, the defeat represented a difficult introduction to life against the reigning champions.

City looked disjointed and struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity throughout the encounter.

Pep Guardiola enjoyed a hugely successful decade in Manchester, winning 20 trophies, including the FA Cup and League Cup in his final season. However, City have not won the Premier League since 2024 and finished seven points behind Arsenal last season.

Maresca, who was selected to succeed Guardiola after leaving Chelsea in January following a turbulent spell, now faces the major task of closing the gap between City and the champions.

City will begin their Premier League campaign at home against Bournemouth on August 23.

Arsenal Strike Early

Arteta had previously insisted that his players remained “hungry” for more trophies, with their painful Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in May providing additional motivation.

His players backed up that claim almost immediately.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, who featured in Arsenal’s midfield despite reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, produced a brilliant pass that split the City defence.

Calafiori raced onto the ball, took advantage of poor marking and calmly finished past Donnarumma from 12 yards.

The goal was reportedly Arsenal’s quickest in the Community Shield since 1968.

City struggled to respond, with new signing Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, unable to impose himself on the game.

Haaland also endured a quiet afternoon, despite having opportunities to get City back into the contest.

Instead, Arsenal remained in control and eventually completed a convincing victory through Odegaard.

The result means Arsenal have lifted their 18th Community Shield, although history shows that winning the trophy does not necessarily guarantee Premier League success. Only Manchester City, in 2019, have gone on to win the league among the previous 15 Community Shield winners.

However, judging by Arsenal’s dominant display in Cardiff, Arteta’s men appear determined to make this season about much more than just a strong start.

The reigning champions have sent an early warning to their Premier League rivals: Arsenal are hungry for more.
