The police have released new details on the ongoing investigation into Omoyele Sowore, firmly denying allegations of torture and emphasizing that all procedures were conducted within the law.

The police have confirmed that activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore is currently under active investigation, emphasizing that his arrest was carried out in full compliance with legal provisions and strict adherence to constitutional safeguards, due process, and his rights.

According to the police, Sowore is expected to appear soon before a court of competent jurisdiction.

This statement comes after Sowore, while in detention following an invitation by the Inspector General of Police, posted on his X account accusing the police of torture and claiming his arm was broken during custody.

The police dismissed these allegations as disinformation aimed at misleading the public and inciting unwarranted outrage.

“The viral image of Mr. Sowore with a bandaged arm has been mischievously presented to mislead the public and stir unwarranted outrage. For the record, the bandage was part of his personal belongings at the time he honoured the Police’s invitation—prior to his arrest and detention,” the statement read.

Following reports that Sowore was seen wearing the bandage while in custody, the Inspector-General of Police ordered an internal investigation to determine how he had access to it during detention, especially since Sowore consistently refused medical examinations by independent police medical teams.

“This proactive step underscores the IGP’s unwavering commitment to transparency, professionalism, and strict adherence to established custodial protocols,” the police added.

The police also disclosed that two separate medical teams, one led by the Medical Director of the Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital on August 7, 2025, and another by the Force Medical Officer on August 8, 2025, were dispatched to examine Sowore. Both times, the suspect declined access to medical evaluation.

“These refusals are officially documented. While the Police respect the individual’s right to decline medical assessment, the record must show that the opportunity for independent medical verification was twice provided and twice rejected,” the police concluded.
