  • The full story of Ayodele Fayose and why he rejected President Bola Tinubu’s appointment offer has sparked fresh political conversations, as the former Ekiti State governor opens up on his decision to step away from active politics after years of public service.

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has revealed that he turned down an offer of appointment from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying he preferred to focus on his personal life after years in public service.

Fayose made the disclosure on Wednesday during Politics Today, a political affairs programme aired on Channels Television.

The former governor, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that despite his long-standing friendship with Tinubu, he had no plans to join or accept any political position under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

“Have you seen me taking appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’ At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible, doing other things I need to do. I’ve served well — two-time governor — I’ve done well. Tomorrow will hold itself,” Fayose said.

He stressed that while he remains a long-time friend of Tinubu, their relationship does not translate into political alignment.

“I’ve not been with APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth,” he added.

On the upcoming 2027 general elections, Fayose said only Peter Obi of the Labour Party currently commands the national appeal strong enough to challenge the ruling APC.

“Tell me who would defeat APC? The only opposition that I know that is in Nigeria — I am not saying he will win Asiwaju — the only person that has traction is Obi. Despite not being in government, he is the only one talking and everywhere. I give it to him,” Fayose said.

The outspoken politician added that while he continues to criticise where necessary, his political choices are guided by principle, not personal gain.

Fayose declined to confirm whether he believes Obi is a more worthy opposition figure than Goodluck Jonathan or Rotimi Amaechi, maintaining that his focus remains on personal growth and objectivity in public commentary.
