  • Detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that he is ready to open his defence and will call 23 witnesses — including top Nigerian political and military figures such as Nyesom Wike, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday told the Federal High Court, Abuja that he is prepared to open his defence in the ongoing case brought against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Kanu personally filed a fresh motion dated October 21, 2025, expressing his readiness to begin his defence in line with an earlier court directive made on October 16, 2025, by Justice James Omotosho, which ordered him to commence his defence on October 24.

In his motion, the IPOB leader revealed plans to call 23 witnesses, divided into two categories — “ordinary but material witnesses” and “vital and compellable witnesses” — under Section 232 of the Evidence Act, 2011.

Among those Kanu intends to summon as compellable witnesses are:

Others named include former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN); ex-NIA Director-General, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; and DSS Director-General, Yusuf Magaji Bichi.

Kanu stated that he would personally testify on his own behalf and assured the court that he would not waste judicial time, insisting that justice “must not only be done but must be seen to have been done.”

Meanwhile, hours earlier, a Magistrate Court in Abuja ordered the remand of Kanu’s special counsel, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, alongside 12 others arrested during Monday’s protest calling for his release.

The police charged the 13 individuals with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, and public disturbance, offences contrary to Sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Halima Wali, ordered that they be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending their arraignment on October 24.
