Popular Nigerian fashion designer Veekee James has come under fire on social media following remarks she made about women taking financial responsibility in their homes.

Speaking at a Women’s Conference in America, Veekee emphasized that financially independent women who do not rely solely on their husbands are the ones who stand out. In her words:

“The woman who stands out the most is the one who does not wait around for her husband’s money. She feeds her home, she feeds her husband, she feeds her home, she pays her staff.”

The comment quickly stirred reactions online, with many women accusing her of projecting her personal marital dynamic onto others. Several critics suggested that her statement implies she shoulders most of the financial responsibility in her marriage to her husband, Femi, and argued that such expectations should not be generalized to all marriages.

In response, multiple videos circulated on social media featuring women criticizing the designer’s comments, while others debated the broader issue of financial roles within marriage. Some users agreed with Veekee, arguing that independence is empowering, while others insisted that marriage should be a partnership where financial responsibilities vary and no single model is superior.

Veekee James’ remarks have sparked a wider conversation about gender roles, financial independence, and societal expectations for women in contemporary relationships, highlighting the tension between personal experience and universal advice.
