- Abia State Governor Alex Otti has unveiled two newly acquired United Nigeria Airlines aircraft named in honour of literary icon Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, praising the initiative as a celebration of Nigerian excellence.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Thursday unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft belonging to United Nigeria Airlines, named after renowned author Professor Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.
The unveiling ceremony was held at Nesto Aviation Services, Ikeja, Lagos, and attracted key figures from the aviation industry and government.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otti commended the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, for recognising and celebrating distinguished Nigerians through the naming of the aircraft.
According to the governor, honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to society is a worthy initiative that deserves recognition.
Otti also praised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for encouraging private-sector participation in Nigeria’s aviation industry and supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening local airlines.
He further applauded plans to establish an aircraft leasing company, noting that such a move would improve the operational capacity of indigenous carriers.
The governor also appreciated the Federal Government’s support for the Abia Airport project, revealing that work on the runway is already at an advanced stage. He reiterated Abia State’s readiness to serve as a hub for United Nigeria Airlines.
In his remarks, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo said the acquisition of the aircraft reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector and the positive impact of ongoing reforms.
He explained that one aircraft was named after Chinua Achebe in recognition of the late literary icon’s global influence, while the second was named after Igwe Alfred Achebe in honour of his leadership, corporate achievements, and contributions to national development.
