Fresh fears have emerged over the worsening security situation in Kaduna State after suspected ‘repentant’ bandits killed a commercial driver and abducted nine other persons in separate attacks along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road and in a farming community within Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.

The slain driver, identified as Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, was reportedly the grandson of one of the District Heads in the Birnin Gwari Emirate.

According to family sources, Ibrahim was attacked and killed at Kwanan Giginya along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway when heavily armed men opened fire on his commercial vehicle.

The assailants reportedly shot him dead on the spot before abducting about five passengers travelling in the vehicle.

In a separate attack, four farmers were reportedly kidnapped while working on their farmlands in the Kurgi area of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.

Sources said the victims were carrying out their normal farming activities when armed men stormed the area and whisked them away to an unknown destination.

The latest incidents have renewed concerns among residents over the continued activities of armed groups in the area despite previous reports of peace agreements and reconciliation efforts involving some bandit factions.

Community members say the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari axis remains one of the most dangerous routes in the region, with frequent cases of kidnappings, killings, and armed robberies disrupting daily life.

Residents further alleged that criminal gangs operating in the area regularly attack motorists and villagers, seizing motorcycles, mobile phones, cash, and other valuables during their operations.

Many also complained that several incidents go unreported, creating the impression that the scale of insecurity is lower than it actually is.
