No fewer than five (5) persons suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were arrested on Monday, July 31, 2023 after troops of the Nigerian Army in partnership with the police and other security agencies raided the hideouts of the group.

VerseNews Nigeria reports that in a statement issued by the Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director, Army Public Relations, the operations were carried out in Orsomoghu forest spanning Anambra and Imo States.

Brigadier General said the operation was sequel to report on violent activities of the criminal group enforcing the illegal two weeks sit-at-home order in Onitsha, Nnewi and Iheme Obosi in Anambra State, and New Market in Enugu state.

Troops cleared IPOB camps in Ekeututu, Orsomoghu, Lilu and made arrest of the fleeing members of the group and recovered IPOB flag, one CCTV camera and two detonated IED bombs and a fabricated mortar tube.

As a result of the operation, five soldiers and two policemen sustained injuries from the IED detonated by the criminals.

The Nigerian Army encourages the people of South East to continue to support ongoing operations with information and to disregard the unlawful two weeks sit-at-home order.

This comes after the factional leader of the IPOB, Simon Ekpa on Saturday vowed that the planned two-week sit-at-home order in the region will hold despite instruction from detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu to cancel any other sit-at-home in the region.
